Naruto characters part 2/?

People have already discussed some of this, but I really think that the downfall of the Red Lotus might be one of the most tragic symbolic things I’ve seen on this show.

Not only where they taken down by their own elements (as illustrated in this gifset) in an allegory showing the unbeatable strength of their powers - the irony in being so paradoxically powerful that nothing but their own strength could stop them - but I think there’s a deeper layer of symbolism to their demise. The group facing the Red Lotus consists of individual characters that essentially all served a significant contrast to the Red Lotus’ core ideals.

Behind Korra stood

  • the leaders Suyin, Tonraq, Tenzin - including future leader Jinora.
  • Group unities the metal benders and the Air Nation.
  • Upholders of law and order Lin, Mako, (Bumi).

The Red Lotus preached chaos, the downfall of structured existence and elimination of world leaders as their objective; against them stood world leaders, nations and law enforcement, beautifully presenting that this was a battle between forces and ideologies on several levels. (Suyin and the metal clan isn’t exactly a world nation, but in essence it functions as a nation on a miniature scale).

I think it’s especially satisfying that it was the Air Nation that collectively took down Zaheer, because Zaheer was highly appropriative of their culture. Since his introduction, he’s spend quite a lot of time supposedly admiring and quoting airbending philosophies (which he presumably takes out of context).

The fact that he and his comrades goes on to attack them, destroy their sacred places and disallow them any kind of humanized treatment or agency only to use them as a tool in his plans shows how disingenuous his respect actually was. The Air Nation lead by their future matriarch and the Avatar, literally and figuratively pulled Zaheer back down to earth.

The Red Lotus made Korra question her vindication for existing as the identity of the Avatar through forcing her to face her worst fears, but as a collective the group confronting the Red Lotus did something similar to their ideology.

"Are you sure that’s a real spell?" said the girl. "Well, it’s not very good, is it? I’ve tried a few simple spells just for practice and it’s all worked for me. Nobody in my family’s magic at all, it was ever such a surprise when I got my letter, but I was ever so pleased, of course, I mean, it’s the very best school of witchcraft there is, I’ve heard—I’ve learned all our course books by heart, of course, I just hope it will be enough—I’m Hermione Granger, by the way, who are you?”

having grown up with the HP series, i have said on multiple occasions that i am hermione granger. it’s no coincidence that we’ve never been in the same room, and i too am a magical bossy know-it-all with big hair who’s smart in school.

but now…now it’s OFFICIAL. and here are the pics to prove it~
